Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education (KOBE) services the following First Nation schools in remote locations in Northwestern Ontario:

  • Wasaho Cree Nation School, Fort Severn;
  • Deer Lake First Nation School, Deer Lake;
  • Keewaywin First Nation School, Keewaywin;
  • Ahgwahbuush Memorial School, Poplar Hill;
  • Victoria Linklater Memorial School, North Spirit Lake; and
  • Working in close collaboration with KiHS, KOSSS and K-Net Services.

KOBE is a forward-thinking First Nations school board with 2 board offices, comprised of 14 staff and 1250 combined students.

Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education is currently searching for a Finance/Human Resources Manager to implement initiatives at the board level supporting the community schools. The Finance/Human Resources Manager will be required to work collaboratively with all KOBE staff to ensure full delivery of the KOBE Human Resources Policies. This contract is a one-year term, open to renewal pending funding. KOBE offers competitive salary, based on experience and education.

This position will be based out of the KOBE office in Balmertown or Sioux Lookout, Ontario where they will be available to provide second and third level services to the five First Nation schools and other KOBE offices. The KOBE Finance Manager will oversee the Human Resource portfolio and will oversee the development of the KOBE financial management plan. The position will be responsible for the following activities:

Financial Management

  • Work closely with the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Finance Department to establish appropriate accounting system for KOBE's finances.
  • Complete year end auditing reports and measures, to be distributed to the KOBE Board of Directors.
  • Distribute funding allocations in a timely manner (quarterly).
  • Work with KO community schools and KOBE programs with respect to completing needs analysis measures.
  • To provide the proper professional development as needed throughout the year.

Human Resources

  • Work closely with partners to further implement the KOBE Human Resources Policies.
  • Strategically support the professional development framework, as outlined in the KOBE Board Improvement Plan and proposals.
  • Continue to support the implementation of KOBE NTIP (New Teacher Induction Process) in partnership with our provincial board partner, including board-wide orientation process.
  • Update and modify the KOBE Board Improvement Plan and 5-year Strategic Plan, as needed throughout each phase of development.
  • Work with KOBE management to continue to develop the work of KOBE Incorporation and strengthening board capacity.
  • Work with the communities and Local Education Authority (LEA) to develop a common compensation package including investigating acquiring partnership with the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP).

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post Secondary education related to finance and/or human resources, education degree;
  • Working experience with First Nations Federal funding mechanisms and reporting process;
  • Work as part of an educational team with a passion for improving First Nations education;
  • Plan independently and implement various educational projects at a high-functioning level;
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Knowledge of a First Nations language is an asset;
  • High level of technological proficiency;
  • Meet deadlines;
  • Research independently to explore a variety of best educational practices; and
  • Provide professional development through a variety of models (online, video-conference, face-to-face, small group workshops, etc.).
