Harper Government Invests to Support Aboriginal Community Economic Development, Small Business Growth and Job Creation

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment to help create jobs, growth and prosperity in Aboriginal communities and across Northern Ontario.

The investment totalling $1,273,000 will support a variety of innovation, community economic development and small business initiatives (details in attached information sheet). Recipients of the FedNor funding include Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund, Thunder Bay Ventures, Matawa First Nations Management, Muskrat Dam First Nation and Lakehead University.

 The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development and Community Futures Programs, which support projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
 Since 2006, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, the Harper Government has invested more than $308 million in support of 1,500 projects. These investments have supported more than 15,000 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
