Community Activities
North Spirit Lake hosts' recreational, traditional, and social activities throughout the year. Recreational, Traditional, and Social Acitvities include; baseball tournaments, volleyball tournaments during the summer, annual and seasonal feasts, traditional teachings in arts and crafts, traditional practices along with other holiday celebrations. Children enjoy using their community canoes during the summer. They also enjoy swimming in the lakes near their home community
Community Services
The Victoria Linklater Memorial School provides the community with education up to Grade 8. Students have the option to leave their home community to attend High School outside of their community. They also have to option to attend KIHS. North Spirit has a fully equipped 24 hour nursing station called Stacey Rae Memorial Health Station. The Station provides daily clinics, telemedicine, public health services, and emergency services. KO Telemedicine (KOTM) delivers clinical, educational and administrative services through videoconferencing and advanced information communication technologies. Social Services are usually provided by the Health department and the Band Office including; Ontario Works, Aboriginal Diabetes, Mental Health, Tikinagan Child and Family Services, and NNADAP. Nishnawbe Aski Nation Police provide policing services to the community of North Sprit Lake. Court in North Spirit Lake is held on the quarterly basis. Local food stores provide the community with basic foods and products that are needed on the daily basis.
Local Business
North Spirit Lake owns and operates a local internet and cell phone service to residences and businesses. Cellular Data roaming is available on the Rogers Network. The E-centre is a public building open for computer use and includes the local Radio Station which is used daily to share community news. Many youth sell baking and crafts through the buy and sell facebook group. Community guides are available with boat rental to travel the land and lakes. Cameron’s Store and Jimmy’s store have snacks and other items for sale in the evenings. Mamaskatch Meejims has groceries, cell phone cards and other items for sale. Susan Rae’s family operates a local store with groceries and household items. There are many artists in the community who paint and make handicrafts.
Accommodations are available with Susan Rae’s family (3 suites with wifi and shared kitchen). The band office can make the teacherages available upon request in the summer when not occupied. The MTO has 4 beds with shared kitchen and lounge.
