Identifying gaps in services for children aged 0-18 in our communities, KO developed in community services in 2018 for the following:
- Occupational Therapist
- Speech-Language Pathologist
- Behavioural Therapist
- Physiotherapist
With the unforeseen Covid Crisis services halted for community lockdowns or pandemic protocols with resulted in KO Health implementing a Therapy Assistance program in community with the guidance of our service providers.
Behavioral Therapy is a therapeutic approach targeting mental health disorders by addressing emotional distress and impaired functioning. Specifically tailored for children and youth, this talk therapy aids in identifying and modifying unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. Through guidance, clients gain insight into the triggers behind their behavioral changes and learn techniques to manage their physical responses to emotional shifts. Treatment objectives include focusing on the present and future, reducing distress, improving functioning, and enhancing overall well-being and quality of life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers valuable tools to assist children in gaining mastery over various challenges, including self-defeating thoughts, impulsivity, defiance, and escalations. Through targeted interventions, CBT facilitates the replacement of negative reactions with positive outcomes, fostering an improved self-image, instilling new coping mechanisms, honing problem-solving skills, and promoting greater self-control.
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) specialize in the assessment and treatment of individuals across all age groups experiencing a diverse range of communication and swallowing disorders. These highly skilled professionals operate within various settings, including private practices, hospitals, schools, clinics/rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities, employing their expertise to address the unique needs of everyone they serve. Those who benefit from seeing an SLP include individuals having trouble communicating, producing speech, social difficulties, challenges with reading and writing, requiring alternative communication methods, and struggling with eating and swallowing.
Physiotherapy encompasses the comprehensive evaluation of strength, flexibility, and gross motor skills, including activities such as walking, running, balance, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as participation in sports and recreational activities, all aimed at fostering functional independence and enhancing participation.
Physiotherapists conduct thorough assessments covering a spectrum of areas, including those mentioned above, and prescribe appropriate interventions, including medications and specialized equipment such as walkers, gait trainers, and adaptive bikes.
Children experiencing various challenges such as milestone delays (e.g., crawling, walking, running), gross motor skills delays, post-fracture recovery, walking abnormalities (e.g., tiptoe walking, in-toeing), balance and coordination issues, and muscle pain or discomfort during movement can benefit from physiotherapy.
Simple yet effective solutions to address and prevent musculoskeletal issues include stretching exercises, yoga, engaging in physical activities, and maintaining proper posture.
Currently, they provide administrative support to the therapists – client scheduling during community visits, distributing therapy programs, referring clients to the Jordan’s Principle team for OT, PT, and S-LP. Assist with other visiting KO Health departments as needed.
As Therapy Assistants continue to learn and increase their skillsets, they will see clients 1:1 to provide therapist approved and prescribed programs/treatment under the supervision of the therapists.
